You can take a flight from Panama City which will take you about 20 minutes or you can take a boat from Colon to the San Blas Islands. As far as San Blas hotels go, you should not expect to find any North American or European style luxury hotels or hotel chains. There are only a few hotels in San Blas and your only other options would be to stay with a Kuna family or at a hostel. The San Blas Panama hotels are classified as rustic, basic or simple. For nature lovers, you can participate in a jungle trek to Saibar Maid waterfalls for birdwatching and photographing the wildlife and fauna of the rainforest with a tourguide. For those especially interested in tropical birdwatching, there is an opportunity to go to Diwar Dumad, an uninhabited island.
The above San Blas hotels are your main options for your vacation in the San Blas Islands. At the present time, since the islands have only recently been open to tourism, there are not many hotels to choose from unfortunately. It is predicted though, that the islands will become a more popular vacation destination as tourists discover the beauty of these islands. If you are looking to “get away from it all”, the San Blas Islands are a perfect choice for you. The San Blas Islands are also a wonderful destination for children too.

San Blas Islands Geography
Posted by Travel Editor
The San Blas Islands with its numerous natural attractions continues to be among the favorite travel destinations for those seeking adventure, a tropical island escape, surfing or relaxing for those in the know around the world. Whether it is miles and miles of white, pristine sandy beaches or lush green vegetation in the rain forests, you will never be far away from natural splendor here. Situated in the Caribbean Sea, these islands are an archipelago located on the northeast coast of Panama. It is just a 20 minute to one half an hour flight from Panama City to the San Blas Islands on the national airline.
More than 350 coral reef islands make up the San Blas Islands. These beautiful islands are scattered all over the northeast coast of Panama, with some of the islands being only a few meters above the water. Stretching for about 100 miles, this group of islands shows a diverse range of topography. In the distance, you can see the mountains of Panama.
You can find virtually every kind of topography from grasslands to sandy beaches for example on the island of El Porvenir, the main island. There are three daily flights to El Porvenir from Panama City. This town is the most important of all islands, being the commercial hub and administrative center. You can find picture perfect beaches on El Porvenir, complete with rows and rows of palm trees on this island. You can also find dense vegetation in some of the areas of the island.
Another good example of the typical geographical conditions in the San Blas Islands can be found in Wichubwala Island too. This is another favorite island with the tourists. You can find a great mix of natural beauty in the form of dense forests, beaches, scrubs and even agricultural crops on these beautiful islands. The blue lagoon that you can find on this island is just about perfect for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling if you are looking for this type of vacation in San Blas.
You can also find many banana plantations in Carti-sugtupu Island, another town in the area, where you can find a mix of jungle, grasslands and plantations. You can find similar geographical features in many other islands such as Chutupu, Coco Blanco and Kagantupu. While topographical variations can be found on the different islands of the San Blas region, one thing definitely spectacular and common on all the islands are the great beaches and their palm trees, something that remains common to almost all the islands in the area. Spectacular stretches of sand, surf, the lazy palm trees and sun is what makes every island here, whether populated or deserted, something special.
